UK Low-Carbon Know How Ranks High on 2012 Global Cleantech 100

The Cleantech list is just the latest in a string of indices that demonstrate the UK’s leadership in cleantech

British cleantech companies feature prominently for 4th year in row; further confirms UK global leadership in low-carbon innovation.

Washington D.C. (October 1, 2012) – The Cleantech Group today released its 2012 Global Cleantech 100, a list of 100 private companies from around the world judged most likely to make a significant impact on clean technology over the next five to 10 years. For the fourth year in a row, the United Kingdom boasts the second highest number of companies on the list, surpassed only by the United States.

“The strong showing by British companies on this global list is a clear indicator of the innovative and dynamic business environment created by the UK’s policy commitments to reduce carbon emissions and grow a sustainable economy,” said Mike Rosenfeld, UK Trade & Investment, Vice Consul and Senior Director for Clean Technology, North America. “This ranking also demonstrates that UK companies are forging international alliances that are helping to advance the global clean technology industry and pave the way to a cleaner energy future.”

For example, Breathing Buildings, one of eight UK companies on the 2012 Global Cleantech 100 list, signed a joint development agreement with U.S.-based Price Industries last March to introduce its unique low-energy ventilation system into the U.S. market.

Enecsys Limited, a solar micro inverter company originating in Cambridge, UK, has made the list three years in a row. Since its inception in 2003, the company has made significant strides in the solar industry through key distribution and module manufacturing partnerships. Today, as the recognized leading micro inverter supplier in Europe, Enecsys is quickly gaining traction in other markets worldwide with offices in the United States, Germany and Taiwan.

Joining Breathing Buildings and Enecsys on the list are six other UK companies, many of which are focused on deploying innovative technologies to increase energy efficiency and conservation. They include: Amantys, Highview Power Storage, i2O Water, Nexeon, Nujira, and Passiv Systems.

The Cleantech list is just the latest in a string of indices that demonstrate the UK’s leadership in cleantech: The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy’s 2012 International Energy Efficiency Scorecard ranked the UK first among 12 of the world’s largest economies in overall energy efficiency. In the Climate Institute’s G20 Low Carbon Competitiveness Index 2012 Update, the UK placed third, up from fourth place in 2009.
