This came in its response to the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee report on ‘The future of Britain’s electricity networks’.

ENA also welcomed the Government’s recognition of the need to be proactive in network development and provide strategic leadership so that we are prepared for the future changes expected to Britain’s electricity system.

In its response to the Select Committee, the Government also highlighted the importance of investment in the networks to deliver on climate change targets.

ENA Chief Executive, David Smith, said:

"It is encouraging to see continued recognition of the vital role the networks will play in the transition to an affordable, secure and low carbon future for the UK.

"In the evidence ENA gave to the Committee last summer, we were keen to emphasise the role of Government in providing strategic direction. We welcome their comments today recognising the importance of early investment as essential for the development of a smarter grid."
